“This is what I think, and I hope I can say this: I don’t think this was always the plan, that this was going to happen this year, that I was going to get engaged,” Lawson tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “I think Mike and Matia [Jackett], playing Phoebe and Seth… When they saw us together, and when we were together, there was something really special. And I remember talking to the writers, and it was like, ‘We don’t know. We actually don’t know which way it’s going to go yet’.”
“I was shocked when I read that we get engaged,” she continues. “I text Matia right away, because… I just love her so much. And so I was like, ‘Guess what?’ And I sent her the episode— I wasn’t supposed to yet; I’m totally spoiling that now. But I was like, ‘Yo, read this.’ And I text Mike, too, because I was like, ‘Oh, this is beautiful.’ And now we get to be a family even longer.”
Lawson praises the writers for leaning into what was working after seeing the dynamic play out on-screen. “I do think that that was something that came out of season 1, not something that was planned for season 1, and I love that so,” she says. “And that’s why the writers are also so great, and the Brandons [AKA showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier] are so great: As they’re following us a little bit, they’re paying attention to us and what’s working and where we are expanding… I love that.”
