The producing team behind Hallmarks’ hit period drama When Calls The Heart, including Michael Landon Jr., Ken Lazebnik and Brian Bird, is heading into the future. And, by that, we mean present day.
And, like When Calls The Heart, this new project, Home To Harmony, is based on a series of best-selling novels, this one written by Philip Gulley.
In the exclusive trailer for the extended pilot, we meet widowed pastor and father Sam Gardner (Sex/Life‘s Mike Vogel) as he’s forced to leave his parish in Brooklyn. Moments later, he receives a call that Pastor Taylor from his hometown church has died and left instructions to offer Sam the job.
“We were just as surprised, given your background as a red-hot chili dog,” says one of the men on the phone.
Later, Pastor Sam rocks a leather jacket and pulls up to Deena’s house on a motorcycle to ask her, “What happened after that summer? You just vanished.” As he speaks, we catch a glimpse of a flashback and Sam sporting some very, very long hair as a teen. Then Deena’s father tells teen Sam, “My daughter has a future, and it’s not with you.”
“We were kids, two kids who thought a few summers meant forever,” Deena says.
Meanwhile, Lilly is struggling with her grief and fitting in, and she acts out, even taking the car.
At church, Sam says, “I didn’t finish my sermon for this week. Not one word felt true. Maybe that’s what faith is, not the absence of doubt, but the beauty in the brokenness.”
According to the project’s official synopsis, Sam now “must shepherd a quirky congregation, raise two grieving kids and confront the first love he left behind. All the while, he’ll secretly wrestle with whether he still believes the sermons he preaches, as he rebuilds his faith, one parishioner at a time.”
For director and EP Landon Jr., who is the son of the late Little House On The Prairie-star Michael Landon, creating family-friendly entertainment is what he knows.
“I grew up on the sets of Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie,” he once told Guideposts. — “They were magical times for me.”
